Audience and Institution Essay

Marketing in the media of film is very important because it gives the film more exposure. Exposing and promoting the film will catch the people’s attention and will get them more excited to watch it. The more people that watch the film the more money the film will bring in. Marketing goes from commercials, t-shirts, toys, posters, key chains and much more.

When it comes to marketing in films every film has their own creative ways of doing it. Like in black panther they used cross promotion with the NBA, and they showed the debut of the trailer during the finals game. This helped a lot because there were a lot of viewers. They also used cross promotion with Lexus, a special commercial for the 2018 Lexus LS 500 included a drawing inspiration from the movie. Same thing goes for the movie Fantastic Beast. The film used cross promotion with AT&T they decorated stores by putting posters up. Google also had video ads that featured footage from the trailer. The creatures of Jurassic World partnered with Universal studios and got comcast television companies to show old Jurassic park movies and show little previews of the new movie on NBC. When in stores I noticed a lot of merchandise and some of the characters. It is one of the easiest ways to market and promote because people are always shopping so its guaranteed to be seen. A common thing are t-shirts. Fantastic beast sold shirts in Hot Topic with one of the actors on it along with Beauty and the Beast. Another thing I notice in stores is toys. Kids love toys especially if it is from a movie they like. Fantastic Beast is a film that I noticed has a lot of different toys in the toy section of stores like Walmart.  Also, Jurassic World distributed Lego toys that had the Jurassic World theme that was cool.  Now when it comes to holidays that’s when films try to bring out a lot of their creativity. Halloween is all about costumes and trick or treating and when that time of year comes around there are always costumes that impersonate characters from movies. The Beauty and the Beast is a common one because what little girl would not want to be a princess for Halloween?   Another holiday is Easter; with Jurassic world being about dinosaurs and dinosaurs have children by laying eggs they decided to have an Easter egg hunt online. It was a very smart way to get exposure. Merchandise is a quick marketing strategy for films. Synergy marketing is another important one. Synergy was used in many films and one for example is Black Panther. AT&T along with the Warner Brothers got together and promoted the film to the world. It encouraged people to watch it and hyped the movie up. Same thing with Beauty and the Beast, Disney made corporate synergy when people hosted a special edition of “The Bachelor” on ABC to promote the release of the movie.

In conclusion, marketing is very important in the film industry because without marketing the films would not get the explore that is needed. Cross promotion and Synergy play big parts. It makes people want to watch it and makes it more interesting. There are many ways that marketing can happen it ranges from merchandise like t-shirts, toys, jewelry, all the way to posters there is a variety of ways it can happen.

Gamme of Throne- Extract Essay

The author’s vision for the film was to have the audience feel like they’re in an adventure and a fantasy. There is a kingdom and a long conversation about knights and ships. Throughout the long conversation the actors introduced themselves as kings. Pirates were also mentioned throughout the conversation. There is also footage of people on ships which shows that they are going on an adventure somewhere.

Scene one included many angles. The high angle of the ship and eventually showing the statue along with a view of the whole town shows the kingdom that they are about to enter. The establishing shot shows the whole scene it shows how the kingdom looks and a view of the knight statue that is on the rocks. There was no editing in the first scene. The sound used was non diegetic and diegetic. The diegetic was used when the music was playing in the background it was like a mysterious sound that helped enhance the film and drag the audience attention to the screen and believe something mysterious was about to come and lead them onto an adventure. There was non- diegetic sound as well it was used for the birds that were flying over the ship this added life to the movie so it can feel real like how a fantasy should. The mis en scene included a ship as a prop this ship looks like one from a long time ago maybe even something a pirate would be on it shows that they are going somewhere maybe on an adventure. There was also the setting it took place in a kingdom. Kingdoms are for royalty so it helped increase the idea of the audience being in a fantasy.

For scene 2 there was a three-person shot which included a king this showed that they were in some type of kingdom because what’s a kingdom without its king. There was also a point of view shot of when the actors were looking at the king it showed that they were taking the king serious because they were in his kingdom. For editing there was shot reverse shot it flipped back and forth from actor to actor when having a conversation about the kingdom this showed the facial expressions of the kings when talking in which they looked upset which makes the audience believe something is about to happen and lead to an adventure. The sound used was dialogue the dialogue was used when having conversation, they talked about the different kings in the kingdom, the queen, and the ships. The costumes that were worn were long suits which was something royalty would wear. The prop was a long table with large chairs this was used for the actors to sit at and have conversation this showed that they had to be royalty because kings usually sit in the large chairs when at a table.

I’m right on what the director vision is because of the all the proof provided in the scenes. From the kingdom, to the ship, and to the whole conversation that happened in the film. They all provided back up for my reasoning of why I believe the director wants the audience to feel like they’re in an adventure and a fantasy.

Creative Critical Reflection

My Creative Critical Reflection was challenging for me. Before I started filming, I wrote down every question and answered them to the best of my ability. Since this was all about me and my experience during the film it caused me to think and hard and be creative. Due to my planes of how I originally was going to record it being canceled I had to film everything on my own. I didn’t want to just stand in front of the camera and talk so I got creative. I decided to be the interviewer as well as the person answering the questions. I switched roles and it was fun. I included an intro and it was in like a talk show format. I dressed up and asked a question and in the next scene was me in different clothing answering it. It was challenging for me to remember everything to say and still reach the length of time needed so it took a while. I had to re shoot many times due to me talking too fast or too slow. I included all the questions needed but also added little questions pertaining to the topic to spice things up. Once I got done recording, I had to edit. I recorded everything on my phone and used iMovie. I added little things in so the video won’t be boring, and people will actually enjoy watching. The editing was by far the best part I got to be creative and have fun. I combined all the videos together since I recorded them separately. The whole 12-minute video was difficult for me, but I found a way to get it done. I can say I learned a lot while doing this. I learned that I enjoy switching roles and filming.

Opening Sequence

My opening sequence was by far the most challenging. For this project my group and I decided to do a horror film. It resulted into becoming a kidnapping film. For research I watched lots of horror opening sequence films. I watched films from The Conjuring, Get out, and Venom. The story board for this project was a lot. It was triple the amount that is usually done. Ten story boards were done in total. The writing and drawing for this took a lot of time since it had a lot of location switching and movement. The locations included the library, a car, and an empty parking lot. When it was time to film there were 4 actors. 3 men who were kidnappers and one female who played the role of the person being kidnapped. The filming was a long process since I wanted to make sure there were a lot of takes being taken. Plenty of times throughout the filming process everyone stopped and looked at the story board. We wanted to make sure the project was being done just how it was writing. I had a vision of how I wanted the film to be done and I didn’t want to leave any parts out. When it was time to edit the videos were sent to the laptop. Since the videos were all recorded on a phone this process was easy. The software that was used was iMovie. Since this software was used in the last project it was easy. While editing everything my group and I realized some parts needed to be re shot. Due to the Corona Virus Pandemic coming it was no way all of us could go out and re shoot. Magic was done and a lot of editing happened, but it helped, and the film was made.

Music Video

My second project was a music video. In the music video my group and I used the song “No Fear” by Dej Loaf. When researching information for this project I watched videos in the genre of Hip Hop and R&B since that was the genre of the song. This project was easy to film. The Mis En Scene was easy to think of. To name a few the location was at the beach since the song was about being happy, living life, and having fun and when you go to the beach that’s what tends to happen. The costume for this project were normal teenage clothes. There was no makeup included. The sun was used as natural light. The story board wasn’t hard at all. Majority of it was full of people dancing and playing around. When it was time to film there was a lot of miscommunication. My group and I didn’t want to get in the way of anyone planes, so I tried to accommodate everyone schedule. The filming day that was first picked didn’t happen because people not being able to make it, so it was rescheduled. When filming day came it was a breeze. Ambrielle’ and I acted while Brandon was the camera man. When it was time to edit this time, iMovie was used. That software was picked due to the videos being recorded on my phone. It was easier to transport the videos to the apple computer this way. At the end of editing I learned that iMovie is so much easier then pinnacle studios.

Commercial

My very first project was a commercial. This project was actually very fun, it was my first time being an actor and creating a commercial. My group and I decided to do a Nike commercial. Since all of us run track my group and I decided it would be smart to do a track commercial. Once the idea of doing the track Nike commercial was in our head we then had to plan and do research. I watched lots of Nike commercial videos specifically track and field ones. They all had on Nike gear and were running on the track while coming out of blocks or they were warming up. Once I watched enough to become inspired the story board was planned. The next step was to film. When filming a camera was used. Once filming day came everyone decided for costume to wear some type of Nike gear. Even though not everyone had on Nike shirts I made sure everyone wore Nike shoes. When filming we took only a couple of takes due to the commercial only needing to be 30 seconds. To make sure the footage would be good the camera man recorded in different angles. He also tried to find the best light so the footage wouldn’t be dark. Once filming was done it was time to edit. To edit a school computer was used and all the videos were imported to the computer. Pinnacle studios was used to edit. This production phase was difficult because it was the first time all of us were doing something like this. It caused lots of confusion and time but eventually it got done. On the bright side of things, I had fun with this project and learned a lot.

Re-editing

When looking back at the film there were a lot of problems. Due to the corona virus pandemic happening it caused a problem with my group and I wanting to re shoot. Many videos needed to be done over. Yet we couldn’t so we had to deal with what we got. It was a long process of editing. The editing was done by me and another group member. The first part of the editing process was making sure no videos were out of order. Then parts of certain videos were cut. Some parts weren’t needed and was causing the film to be too long. Once that was done all the transitions needed to be inserted.

 I remembered from the research part when I watched films the transitions in the movie were fast. It didn’t take no time for the scenes to switch. It was hard to get the transitions to not be seen so the fastest time for transitions was the one used. After all the cuts and transitions were added the titles were next. It was a problem when trying to add the titles. The font that was originally used couldn’t be found. Due to that happening a new font had to be used. It took a while to find a new font since I didn’t want it to be different from the original one. After a long search the new font was found. It looked just like the old one, so it fit right in.

The sound was done by my other group member. When the sound was added there was a problem. I could barely hear the actors talk. That was a problem because without knowing what is being said it will leave the audience in confusion. The sound then had to be fixed. When trying to fix the sound the original music that was added couldn’t be found so a similar one was found instead. Once the new song was added it was edited to where it could be heard but you could also hear the actors talking. With everything finally being put together a lot of stress was let off my shoulders. I went back and made sure no other editing needed to be done. It fit my vision of how I wanted my film to be done, I was very pleased.

Editing Blog

Due to the pandemic it’s been hard to edit. With lots of time to think i started thinking of ideas. I can’t meet up with my group to edit properly. There has been a huge problem trying to figure out how the film is going to be finished. There’s a lot more work that needs to be done. The film isn’t at its full potential. due to my group mate having the laptop that is needed to edit. I can’t physically go out to her house due to quarantine. I’m not allowed to leave my house until all the chaos has calmed down. I thought of FaceTiming my group mate and t trying to help edit.

 It allowed me to see the film and help edit.

 I gave tips on what videos should be where. My group member and I came to a realization that it just can’t be done right now. So many things are wrong in the video. The reshooting happened but the footage wasn’t good enough. I realized some scenes were in different locations and it didn’t add up. Some videos didn’t match with the videos we shot the first time. People were still wondering in the background as well. There were still also noises in the background. There is a need to reshoot before there can be final editing. 

A pause for my production (Pandemic)

There has been a pandemic and a lot has been going on. The superintendent of Broward county decided to close schools. Schools got shut down so kids won’t catch the virus. School will be out for 4 weeks. Due to the corona virus there’s been a lot of chaos. I’ve been in quarantine all week. Staying home and just making sure I’m safe. At first it was just a week off plus spring break. Things escalated and it went to two extra weeks off. More people started getting the virus. 

Then the virus hit Broward county. It’s a emergency that everyone stays safe and inside. The virus has spread quickly and the more people that are out the quicker it spreads. Students aren’t getting proper help from teachers. Everything turned virtual and students have been doing online work now. 

Like the movie antebellum the release date has been postponed. That’s exactly like my group and I film. There hasn’t been a way for us to meet up and reshoot things and edit. Everyone needs to be quarantined so it’s hard to get access to each other physically. It’s like our film has been postponed because there’s not a way we can do anything to it to make it better. 

Reshoot blog

The film isn’t as nice as i want it to be. It’s time to go and reshoot things. When putting the film together i realized they’re problems with certain videos. Like for instance in some there were people in the background when no one should have been in the background. I could see the camera man in the reflection of the car. There were other little noises in the background in some videos as well. When reshooting we will only do certain scenes. Not all the scenes will be recorded over. Now we have to accommodate everyone schedule. Last time it was hard to record on the same day. Everyone is busy and with the coronavirus going around it’s hard. Everyone wants to stay home and be safe. My group and i scheduled to meet up this weekend before the virus gets worse. Locating back at the library filming will happen again. This time try to get different angles to not make the same mistakes. I will also have the camera man take more shots than last time. The goal is to improve the quality so it will not come out like previous videos. I will also be in charge of driving again. I will drive to the funeral home to use the back parking lot. In the back parking lot  the kidnapping and driving scenes will take place. 

Editing Blog

After a long process Filming is finally done. It’s now time to edit and bring this film to life. For the editing process it took a lot of time. Not a lot of websites let you convert your videos for free. So it took a while to find one that allowed it. Once i found one i then helped convert some videos to mp4’s. I converted half of the videos. I did 10 videos and it didn’t take as long as i thought it would. After converting i then had to edit. I helped edit by picking out what videos i believe should go first. 

I put all the videos in order of how they should be in the film. Once iMovie was opened i then dragged and dropped some videos to edit. I helped crop some videos as well. I then went and looked for music to input into the film. I was having a hard time finding music. So it didn’t get added. The filming process went quick due to the fact i just wanted to see how it would look all put together. I then remembered the title was left out. The title was then added into the film after putting everything together. The film  is not as neat and smooth as i want it so i have some more editing to do. 

Peer view

I reviewed group 20 today. One thing i really liked about the film was the action matches. There was one scene where there was a bloody knife shown. It was then switched to the kids dead in another room. It was my favorite action match. It showed that they took their time to plan it out. I liked how the acting was good as well. I liked how they showed the location of the film. It didn’t leave me guessing on where the film was taken place. From the jump you know where all the action was going on at which is very important. 

One suggestion i would make to the film is the part of the video where a male actor came in. I was really confused on that part. He came in and killed someone out of no where. I wanted to know why he did what he did. I believe part of the problem was the sound. They should bring the background music down. It was hard to hear the actors talking. At one point the male was talking. He probably gave a reason why he was about to partake in that action but it was hard to hear so i wouldn’t know. I suggest recording the video over and placing it into the film with a better explanation for the killing.  

Filming Blog: The last filming process before editing

The filming process continued after school on Monday. I found a new library and empty lot to film in. At the time we went it was raining I figured the more it rains the less people will be at the library. I drove to the library and asked the librarian if it was okay to film. She said it was fine and I started recording. It took a lot of takes to get the perfect video. It was getting aggravating so I suggested everyone take a break to gather themselves together. After the break everything was going smoothly again. A couple of more takes were recorded and then I drove us to my family funeral home that was located next to the library. The funeral home has a empty lot that could be used so it was perfect. 

As driving to the funeral home I decided to record any scenes that had to be recorded while someone is driving. A couple of takes were recorded while doing that. Once I finally got to the funeral home I drove to the back of the parking lot. I hopped out the car and the trunk shot was recorded. The scene where the body is put into the trunk was also recorded. It took  many takes to get the perfect video for each scene. While filming it started raining again so I told everyone to get back in the car. Once the rain died down everyone got back out and continued recording. I thought we were done and realized one parking lot scene wasn't recorded so that added more time onto our schedule. After many takes it was finally done and all of us could finally go on about our day.

Filming blog: Filming at Library and Empty Lot

The film process has finally started. I got the car checked Friday night to make sure everything was working good. The adult stated everything was perfect. That day i also got my car washed since i will be bringing the car. My group and I drove to many different libraries. Settling on one all of us went inside to check it out. To make sure it was okay i asked to make sure if it was possible that we could film there. The librarian disagreed due to how noisy it tends to be but my group and i decided to try it. As filming started I didn’t really like how dull it was inside. We continued though to see how it would turn out. When watching over the videos it was a lot of noise in the back ground. Many people were in the library in study groups and it was messing up the sound in our video. The lighting was bad too just like how i thought it would be. After trying the library i drove the car around with my group in it to see if a empty lot could be found. An empty lot is needed for multiple scenes in our film. It’s an really important part. It was pretty difficult to find one that fit our vision. Finding a lot that was empty filming started up again. After recording multiple videos my group and i watched them over and realized we didn’t like them either. I realized More locations need to be found and more research needs to be done so our film can be put together like how it was envisioned. 

Filing blog: Why Filming hasn’t started yet

I did not start filming yet. Filming was suppose to happen last week. Things ended up coming up and it didn’t get done. Everything is together to film but my group and I weren’t prepared. Physically prepared yes but my group and i were more so not mentally ready to film. It’s going to take a lot of retakes and time. Since it was going to take a while I just knew it wasn’t going to be executed properly if filming was done last week. I realized that Friday i was  going to be busy. The day ended up getting rescheduled last minute. Filming will be done after this week. This week I’m busy and everyone is doing their own thing. I want to get filming done as soon as possible so we won’t be behind. Yet all of our schedules have to be accommodated. Due to the fact my group and I have a longer filming process it means less time. It’s going to be my first time doing a intro to a movie so I’m curious on how it’s going to turn out. I will be in charge of bringing the car. Due to that i have to make sure it’s taken care of. I have to make sure it’s clean and everything is working for safety purposes. So a car wash is needed and a look over by a guardian is needed. I’m excited and ready to start this intro!

Storyboard for opening sequence

The elements of a horror film starts from slides 1-5. These scenes were filled with close up shots of every individual involved. Many of the starting scenes are in the library then it moves to the car. As the scenes go by, the intensity grows. The ending of scene 1-5 got even more thrilling. In slides 6-10 it talked about how we are going to go about playing the roles for those scenes. My scenes mainly included medium shots. Majority of the time the scenes are in the car. The scenes get intense as the story goes on. It has an ending that’s going to have you wonder what happens next?

Title design in detail

This powerpoint is about the title design of our final project. The font is very important. It can create a tone. The title could draw people into the movie. For our title font, we are using Blombat. It is a very creepy horror film font. It looks like blood on a wall that has been painted. We are using "Times New Roman" for our names so, that is is bold. But times new roman also will not distract the audience from the film. The powerpoint goes more into depth about our font.
